As we iterated on these character abilities\u2014and his per session leveling attributes\u2014they became the initial driver for Hawkins&#8217; narrative characterization. <br>My responsibilities included <strong>naming and describing each of his abilities<\/strong> <strong>(<em>and their upgrades<\/em>)<\/strong> within context of the MythForce lore.<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column has-x-large-font-size is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"is-style-rounded wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"3421\" height=\"3666\" src=\"https:\/\/dodgethis.com\/portfolio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/mythforce_hawkins.jpg\" alt=\"Hawkins, a Black male archer, summons his unique ghostly bow from the spirit realms. I added visual polish for his abilities, including a character shader with transparency. <br>I worked with the audio designer to trigger all the sound effects on each GameplayAbility, too.<br><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">I achieved my goal to add nuance to Hawkins using gameplay verbs displayed in first person perspective. <em>There<\/em>&#8216;<em>s <a href=\"https:\/\/dodgethis.com\/portfolio\/action-verbs-for-the-ultimate-archer\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1332\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">a post<\/a> focused on the verbs.<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Let&#8217;s dive in to a detailed discussion on narrative, starting with <strong>the most impactful decision I made<\/strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:56% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"742\" height=\"439\" src=\"https:\/\/dodgethis.com\/portfolio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Pipe-Bomb-Reference.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1565 size-full\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"\">While <strong>reviewing Hawkins&#8217; ability prototypes<\/strong> I chose to cut his Overcharge ability, Volley of Souls, which summoned a hail of arrows. Rift Arrow\u2014a crowd control ability invoked via a bouncing bomb arrow\u2014would eventually replace it for launch. This teamplay-focused ability was <strong>designed and implemented during a two month period<\/strong>. Its inspiration came from the zombie-attractant properties of pipe bombs from <em>Left 4 Dead<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:0px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The pivot to Rift Arrow required additional work both for implementation and <strong>creating a clear visual language to distinguish between his two arrow abilities<\/strong>. Lower budget alternatives included moving forward with a new ability building from existing Volley of Souls hand gesture animations. These would have applied new gameplay effects instead of damage over time: an area of effect debuff ability or a global speed boost for allies. Condensing our timeline to deliver Rift Arrow was a risk worth taking because it <strong>allowed us to add multidimensionality<\/strong> to his character while preserving the core gameplay vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Some Development History&#8230;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details\"><summary><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-strong-blue-color is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\">What did prior treatments for Hawkins add to the story?<\/mark> (<em>click to read more<\/em>) <\/summary>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Previously all visions for the fourth party member leaned towards grenade abilities. Hawkins had been written as an Alchemist Demolitions expert, and as a Cleric who threw Holy Hand Grenades. <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:0px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Previously all visions for the fourth party member leaned towards grenade abilities. Hawkins had been written as an Alchemist Demolitions expert, and as a Cleric who threw Holy Hand Grenades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">However, leadership shifted direction on his defining qualities as we started. This major shift came with a new core gameplay vision for him to become the Ultimate Archer.  The Cleric concept had recently been realigned to make him a Vampire Hunter. Now leadership was pushing for him to be a generic survivalist, the Beast Hunter, to provide narrative justification for the archery skillset that our direction required.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Hawkins backstory was becoming muddled\u2014until I help achieve a clear gameplay design to guide it.<br>First, I <strong>led project-wide design group brainstorms and discussions<\/strong> about teamplay archetypes. <br>I started each session by stating our main goal of enhancing party dynamics and teamplay opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">These meetings <strong>transitioned his identity<\/strong> to modify him into <br>a mercenary with deep spiritual connections.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Not only is Hawkins the Ultimate Archer, but also a <\/strong>summoner who interacts with the spirit realms. <strong>His Ultimate Ability slices open rifts that show spirit realms having a <\/strong>tangible impact<strong> on the physical world.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dodgethis.com\/portfolio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/HAWKINS.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"328\" src=\"https:\/\/dodgethis.com\/portfolio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/HAWKINS-1024x328.jpg\" alt=\"Character variations sheet: Black and white line drawings of the character Hawkins. When his wrist-mounted stake launchers disappeared from concept art, it challenged our implemented Combat ability designs. So I <strong>negotiated to give him a bracer<\/strong> that summons a ghostly bow from the spirit realms instead. His Spirit Bow then shoots an arrow straight ahead, ignoring all collisions with the level. This ability became Phantom Shot. The approved prototype for launching vampire stakes could easily be adapted to fit this new theming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Gameplay-driven iterations on his abilities were eventually integrated into the backstory and dialogue. Also, artists&#8217; storyboards to help guide iteration on ability visuals <strong>became part of the core vision<\/strong> for his narrative treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Our writer consulted with me to ensure our new gameplay intentions <strong>guided his dialogue rewrites<\/strong>. We worked together to use verbs for consistent narrative treatment. Only one of two upgrades is selected at a time or the base ability.
